Not sure if Jiu Jitsu is for you?
Well, here's your opportunity to give it a try for FREE! Yes...Free! De Boa is offering a free trail for anyone age 5-??
Jiu Jitsu  won’t just train you, it will change your life! You can learn martial arts anywhere but, at De Boa you will find a huge commitment to teaching you and your children, whether you are here to compete, defend yourself or even to learn self discipline and respect. It is so hard to explain the profound impact Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can have on a person. Most students hope to be able to simply defend themselves. They would have never imagined that not only did they accomplish that, but they are now at a level where they could easily defeat just about anyone who has never had similar training. You can expect to be more fit, toned and look and feel better than you ever had before.

This weekend the 10th AZ International Open took place at Phoenix College, the event marked the first official competition of our gym.  We were very excited to have Purple Belt Tyson Antillon representing the gym along with White Belt Jonny Weber!

Tyson did great, he is quickly becoming a favorite to watch for all the AZ Jiu Jitsu Community.  His fast pace technical matches have the crowd captivated on every grip.  Tyson took second in his weight class and third in the open weight.

Jonny competed in just his second ever Jiu Jitsu tournament.  His first and only match ended with him behind on points.  We are very proud of Jonny for his preparation for the tournament and for getting out on the mats.  He showed what De Boa is all about, great drive and determination accompanied by great sportsmanship and representation of himself and the gym.

This week at De Boa we start a two week series on back takes, back attacks, and back escapes.  First we will take time to look at the matches from our students and areas where we can improve on.  This is a very important piece to competition is the growth after the fact.  We look forward to bringing a larger team to the NABJJF Grand Canyon State Tournament in April!

Today's society has veered away from competition in order to help massage peoples egos and make sure no one feels like a loser.  At De Boa we encourage competition and find areas of improvement win or lose.  Just because you lose doesn't make you a loser.

In life you are not guaranteed to win or be successful at everything you do.  Jiu Jitsu creates a great opportunity to learn how to deal with failures and set backs and how to improve from then.  A better measure of success in life is measuring an individuals ability to reach his' or hers' own potential.

Jiu Jitsu will surely provide many challenging days, days you feel frustrated and torn down.  These days are the days you will learn the most and will prepare you best for the future.  Come figure out how to learn from your challenges and work towards reaching your potential in Jiu Jitsu and in life at De Boa Jiu Jitsu Academy.

A Healthy Lifestyle

How many of you have gone through or are going through a time in your life where you go out and drink several times a week?  How many of you then topped it off with a carne asada burrito at the end?  How many of you wasted the next day on the couch feeling miserable?  How is your wallet looking after a night of drinking, empty?

At De Boa we paint a different lifestyle to follow.  Instead of going out several times a week to the bar, go out several times a week to the gym.  You will find the addiction of Jiu Jitsu is much more fulfilling than the emptiness of your old party lifestyle.

At De Boa you will meet friends that share common goals and interests in life and look to challenge you.   At the bar you will meet friends that challenge you to a shot and then might throw up in your car.

At De Boa you will perfect your diet that makes your body run at peak levels and get in the best shape of your life.  At the bar your body is filled with toxins that slow you down and your diet doesn't benefit from the 2 a.m. drunk food.

At De Boa you will feel sore the next morning but also accomplished and ready to take on the next day.  At the bar you will feel miserable the next day and find it a hard task to take on your couch and your toilet.

At De Boa you will spend your time making yourself better.  At the bar you will spend your money making yourself worse.

The decision is clear my friends, see you on the mat!  This week we are going over guard basics, essential to all skill levels.

Goals For Success

Tom Brady is once again a Super Bowl Champion.  There was a lot of attention going into the game about Brady wanting to play football into his mid 40s, at least until Deflate Gate happened.  The New York Times wrote an article (Tom Brady Cannot Stop) about the lifestyle Brady chooses to live to stay on top of the game and always compete.  I then heard an interview the questioned Brady if he had always been so strict to his routine to success.  He explained that it was a process of figuring out how to take care of himself and insure longevity with the goal in mind to play many more years of football.

I don't know about you but speaking from personal experience I no longer have the goal of winning an NFL Championship.  I recently was asked how I keep motivated to workout.  I thought about it for awhile and I wondered if I had an LA Fitness membership, to pair with a full time job and family would I be able to stay motivated to workout daily...

This is where Jiu Jitsu has enhanced and improved my life greatly.  It is easy for me to want to go to the gym.  To be honest I even had the urge to go train at Half Time during yesterdays Super Bowl.

The opportunity sits within Jiu Jitsu to find your goals that help you live a better life.  Goals are what pushes guys like Brady to choose a different lifestyle.  Jiu Jitsu encompasses both short term and long term goals that can assist you in being the best you possible.  I challenge myself to eat healthier, train healthier, and be a better person daily I have to thank Jiu Jitsu for a large piece of the vision of where I want to be.

Come find your motivation today at De Boa Jiu Jitsu Academy in Surprise, Arizona.
