10th Arizona International Open

1/28/2015

The 10th Arizona International Open is set to take place at Phoenix College on February 21st and 22nd, 2015.  De Boa Jiu Jitsu will be bringing a competition team to the tournament.  This is a great local opportunity to face the challenge of competition.

Competition is an opportunity to learn, not only in the competition its self but also the lead up to it.  De Boa will be running classes that help prepare you for this tournament season.  You can expect classes to be tough and challenging as we push our cardio and our minds.

This week at De Boa it is a perfect time to get lots of drilling in.  We are working on passing the guard, specifically the double under pass.  Drilling time will be added into most classes until the tournament.

Why is Jiu Jitsu Awesome for kids?

Jiu Jitsu for kids:
Introducing a child to the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu  is an excellent way to ensure they will grow up with a strong foundation of patience, confidence and discipline. While some parents are hesitant to get their child involved in any contact sports, the art of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is far gentler than you might think. Your child is more likely to be injured in a playground unsupervised than they would under the care and direction of a good instructor.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will arm your child with positive mental and physical skills that will help him/her in school, at home and in life! As your child will learn to succeed, you’ll see a new kind of discipline emerging, the kind that will positively affect all areas of his or her life. You’ll notice an increased respect for others, and most importantly, for him / herself. This kind of powerful mind/body connection will make them unstoppable when faced with difficulties in life. Your child’s energy, confidence, and spirit rise while he or she becomes strong and confident. We’re not just talking about physical strength, but the kind of strength it takes to resist peer pressure and other negative aspects of life.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a non-striking self-defense martial art system based on leverage and control over the opponent. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is considered to be one of the best self defenses for kids and adults since it’s applied in response to physical aggression, so there’s no need to worry about your child becoming violent.

Animal Style

Join us next week as kids Jiu Jitsu class goes "Animal Style.'  This will be the first Animal Week for our Kids Program.  Animal week will focus on animal movements that partain to Jiu Jitsu.  Our focus during our "Animal Style" classes will be  Koala Guard, Turtle and Spider Guard just to name a few.

Your Child will not be wrestling bears next week, you will have to go to Russia for that.  It is incredible to watch all natural movements of animals that mimic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  In the video above pay attention to the way the bear is constantly taking away space and chaining wrestling takedowns together.

Join us as we have some fun, while taking away some animal skills!

De Boa Jiu Jitsu made some noise last weekend at the 2nd Annual D.A.N Tournament.  Purple belt instructor Tyson Antillon tore through his division finishing both matches by submission.  Tyson then went on to the Open Weight Division and finished all those matches with submissions as well.  Tyson takes double gold with all subs!

Tyson is a core piece to the building of De Boa Jiu Jitsu Competition Team that plans to take 2015 by storm.  It is great to be on a team that pushes each other to get better but is careful of injury in the process.  The thick of the 2015 Tournament Season is approaching us quickly, no time like the present to get ready!

5 Reasons to Check Out De Boa Morning Class

One of the main reasons people give me for not training Jiu Jitsu is that they don't have enough time.  It is important when researching a Jiu Jitsu school that they have classes that will fit your schedule.  At De Boa Jiu Jitsu in Surprise Arizona we offer morning classes at two different times in the morning.  Some people's morning is bright and early before the sun comes out, to others morning is just shy of noon. We do our best to accommodate your busy schedule.  Here are five perks of training in the morning:

1.  Get individualized attention-  Typically morning Jiu Jitsu class has less people, as a result you get more individual time with your instructor.

2.  Great way to start your day-  I can't think of a better way of starting my day than waking up and getting on the mats.  It starts off the day in a positive way and leaves my mind and body feeling energized.

3.  Have your evenings open for family and friends-  Another main reason people stop Jiu Jitsu is because it cuts into family time.  It is often a battle to find a good balance between Jiu Jitsu and the rest of your priorities.  Morning class gives you a chance to spend a little time investing in yourself, and it gives you the rest of the time to spend with family.

4.  Get a chance to roll with upper belts-  Many times when there are many upper belts in class getting rolls with them can be challenging.  When there are less upper belts in class it opens up time to get to work directly with the upper belts.  Training with people that are better than you allows a larger opportunity for growth.

5.  Cheaper than Starbucks-  If you can't start your day without coffee and take that morning trip to Starbucks you are inevitably spending a lot of money on coffee.  For cheaper than the price of your coffee you can spend your time getting healthier and stronger in Jiu Jitsu.

Wake up Surprise, AZ to some Jiu Jitsu!

De Boa Jiu Jitsu is happy to support the D.A.N. Jiu Jitsu Tournament at Nava BJJ in Mesa this weekend.  This is the 2nd Annual D.A.N. Tournament,  this exciting event helps bring awareness to Neurofibromatosis type 2(NF2). Head Instructor of Nava BJJ, Paul Nava,  knows NF2 all to well as his wife, and two children live with it.  To find out more about this disease and the tournament go to D.A.N. Tournament info.

Competition is an important piece to most peoples journey in Jiu Jitsu.  As a competitor you're not guaranteed to win, but without a doubt should be prepared to learn and grow.  Jiu Jitsu competitions break up the competitors into age, belt and weight class to insure tough matches all around.

Did you play high school sports?  Do you miss the competition?

This is what leads many athletes towards Jiu Jitsu.  It is refreshing to be able to compete at the highest level, from the 5 year old day one white belt, to the 40 something year old Black Belt.  Goals can be set and with the right training met.

Come check out De Boa as we prepare to make a big splash in the 2015 tournament season!  It is great to have a team around you as you work towards your goals this year in Jiu Jitsu and life.
